The Brief: A Dual-Purpose Executive Sanctuary
The brief for this high-end Reigate home renovation was to design and project manage the creation of a contemporary home office with a sophisticated, subtle masculine undertone. The space needed to flawlessly incorporate a touch of tradition, centering around and complementing the client’s cherished, existing antique mahogany desk. Crucially, the layout had to deliver a dual-purpose environment: providing highly practical working and storage solutions while simultaneously offering a tranquil, homely space to escape work and unwind when required.
The Design & Procurement Strategy
1. Heritage Furniture Integration & Matching Commissions
To maintain an authentic narrative while addressing extensive administrative storage requirements, our design and procurement team focused on seamless wood-grain matching:
The Focal Anchor: The room was structurally zoned around the client's existing traditional antique mahogany desk, ensuring it held pride of place.
Bespoke Furniture Commissions: To satisfy the client’s storage briefs without causing a visual mismatch, we commissioned a suite of matching antique mahogany furniture. These new storage elements were precisely designed and finished to perfectly mirror the historic patina, grain, and profiles of the original desk.
2. Architectural Texturing & Colour Zoning
To prevent a room heavily dressed in traditional dark mahogany from feeling dated or dark, we introduced a modern, high-contrast wall and textile strategy:
Tactile Wall Foundations: We wrapped the main walls in a neutral, textured wallpaper to introduce organic softness and improve room acoustics.
The Slate Blue Accent Wall: We executed a subtle colour-blocking technique by treating one focal wall in a slightly darker tone. This was intentionally done to complement and elevate the rich slate blue colour woven into the room's wider textile scheme.
Masculine Accent Mapping: To inject depth and a layer of visual interest, we extracted a vibrant mustard yellow tone directly from the client’s existing art canvas. This splash of mustard yellow was applied to soft furnishings, beautifully cutting through the cool slate blues and dark wood tones.
3. Creating the Transitional Balance
By separating the strict "desk work zone" from a dedicated soft-seating area, we delivered a tranquil, homely environment. The room acts as a true office away from work—a refined space where the client can confidently hold executive virtual meetings or comfortably relax with a book.
