The Brief: A High-Fidelity, Colourful Sanctuary for Music Lovers
The brief for this beautiful Chelsea mews house was to design a high-impact, colourful living room for a vibrant, music-loving couple. The space needed to effortlessly blend their deep passion for retro and bohemian aesthetics while seamlessly incorporating sentimental antique family pieces. Key functional requirements included maximizing the seating layout for guest entertainment, curating a sprawling music poster and art print gallery, and creating substantial, bespoke housing for an extensive collection of CDs and vinyl records.
The Design & Procurement Strategy
1. Architectural Audio Storage & Spatial Joinery
To resolve the storage challenges inherent to historic London mews properties, our team designed high-capacity, space-saving built-in furniture:
The Bespoke Audio Storage: We designed and commissioned a premium, bespoke walnut CD and vinyl storage unit. This statement joinery piece was precisely engineered to neatly organize their current physical music media while incorporating built-in expansion space for future collection growth.
The Multi-Functional Window Seat: To maximize guest capacity, we designed a bespoke storage window seat. This unit duals as an integrated storage chest and a comfortable spectator lounge, upholstered in a striking, luxury tie-dye velvet that injects an instant nod to 1960s bohemian glamour.
2. Vibrant Chromatic Layering & Feature Wall Art Articulation
To celebrate the clients' love of bold pink and purple hues, we developed an alternating wall and framing script that turns the entire room into a curated gallery:
Horizontal Strata Wallpapering: We applied two bright-coloured horizontal strata wallpapers across alternating walls. This linear background pattern adds incredible energy and ensures the couples' eclectic art print collection stands proud against the background.
Curated Gallery Framing: Every music poster and art print was analyzed and set into contrasting, high-quality bespoke frames. This intentional juxtaposition creates a highly stylized, cohesive gallery wall that unifies the old and the new.
3. High-Texture Textile Procurement & Antique Hybridization
To ground the vivid colour script in absolute comfort, our procurement team layered contrasting luxury textiles over old and new frames:
The Central Anchor: The spacious main sofa was wrapped in a luxurious antique pewter velvet, adding a sophisticated, glamorous metallic counterweight to the dominant pinks and purples.
Reimagined Antiques: The clients' sentimental antique chairs were completely stripped and reupholstered in bright, vibrant modern fabrics, bridging heritage shapes with bohemian energy.
Footwear Foundations: The floors were grounded using high-end retro, colourful rugs, adding rich pattern, tactile warmth, and acoustic dampening to both main zones of the living space.
