The Brief: Showcasing Worldly Heritage in a Modern London Home
The brief for this spacious Fulham residence was to design and project manage the complete transformation of a living and dining space, infusing it with an understated eclectic charm. The core objective was to create a sophisticated, highly functional environment that beautifully complements the clients' extensive worldly collection of global artefacts and stunning ethnic art. The design needed to seamlessly integrate vast structural storage and display areas without compromising the home's sleek, contemporary aesthetic.
The Design Strategy & Execution
1. Bespoke Joinery & Architectural Display
To address the high-capacity storage brief while establishing a striking designer focal point, our team engineered a custom built-in cabinetry system:
Asymmetrical Bookcases: We designed and built bespoke sideboards seamlessly integrated with custom, backlit asymmetrical bookcases. These were engineered specifically to house the clients' vast library of books and elegantly exhibit their fragile global artefacts.
The Backdrop: To add localized depth and character behind the displays, we introduced exquisite beaded ethnic wallpapers that reference the origin of the art collection while introducing subtle texture and evening glamour.
2. Material Layering & Textural Contrast
To bridge the gap between contemporary London styling and global eclecticism, we sourced a highly curated palette of tactile surfaces and fine metalwork:
Furniture & Textiles: We specified a rich mix of contemporary and eclectic textured fabrics across the seating layout, ensuring the room felt warm and inviting.
Artisan Metals: We procured exquisite, sculptured bronze metalwork side tables to serve as functional art pieces alongside the main furniture.
3. Structural Floor Engineering & Conservatory Transition
The renovation involved significant technical and environmental upgrades to the property’s ground-floor footprint:
Premium Walnut Timber: We supplied and installed high-end engineered walnut wooden floors across the main rooms, complete with a fully integrated underfloor heating (UFH) system for optimum urban comfort.
Conservatory Inset Tiling: To create a distinct yet cohesive transition into the adjoining conservatory, we designed and laid a new, bespoke inset detail tiled floor, adding an elegant geometric touch.
4. Smart Home Lighting Automation
To elevate the art collection to true gallery status, a comprehensive electrical and lighting plan was mapped out:
Art-Focused Illumination: We designed a brand-new smart home lighting plan utilizing precision directional fittings to ensure every piece of ethnic art was beautifully lit.
Layered Scene Settings: We integrated feature ambient lighting options throughout both rooms, providing the clients with automated smart mood lighting scenes tailored perfectly for every social or dining occasion.
